Brimscombe & Thrupp 4 v 1 Brackley Town Saints

(Saturday 30th September 2017)

Sometimes we all have a "bad day at the office" and this was very much the case for Saints at Brimscombe & Thrupp. Too many aimless long balls giving possession away cheaply, naive

tactically, and failing to react to events quickly enough Saints never really looked in the game from the first whistle to the last. Within 2 minutes Saints were behind as Brimscombe's full back cut in from the left and fired his shot past Saints keeper Ali Worby from edge of the area, 1 - 0. Saints did respond to the early setback and after some good work down their left Ryan Knight delivered an excellent cross but unfortunately Alex Stott, coming in at the far post, was unable to get his effort on target. Saints almost got caught out moments later when their attempt to play offside failed but a great recovery tackle from centre-back Joe Ward cleared the danger. With 20 minutes played the visitors did get an equaliser when quick passing through the midfield from Matt Johnson and James Hammond created a chance for Ryan Knight and the attacker made no mistake with the finish, 1 - 1. The scores however weren't level for long as just 5 minutes later a Saints attack broke down and the home side attacked quickly down their left, crossed the ball into the box, and scored their 2nd goal, 2 - 1. This was followed quickly by Brimscombe's 3rd scored from the spot after the assistant referee decided that the home team's strikers acrobatic fall was worthy of a penalty.

Half time: Brimscombe & Thrupp 3 v 1 Brackley Town Saints

Saints Substitution: Calum Pearce on for Sam Bridges - 45 If the first half started badly for Saints the second was even worse as within a minute another cross from the hosts left was headed in at the far post, 4 - 1. Although there was still 44 minutes to play from the hosts 4th goal the game was over as a contest. The home side, with lots of experience on and off the pitch managed the remainder of the game impressively, always looking capable of stepping it up if necessary and keeping the Saints to half-chances and occasional corners.

Saints Substitution: Tom Kalugin on for Matt Johnson – 62

Saints Substitution: Keegan Giles on for Callum Williams - 80

As mentioned earlier everyone has a bad day sometimes and it is to the Saints youngsters credit that they kept working hard throughout, keeping their discipline, and those of us who follow them know that they will recover quickly.

As always there are positives to take and it bodes well for the Saints that playing regularly in his preferred role is bringing out the best in attacker Ryan Knight, midfielder James Watts is beginning to deliver on the promise that he has shown throughout youth football, and adaptable young defender Dan Middleton was again outstanding at centre-back.
