Brackley Town 3-0 North Ferriby United 13/2/18
Win for Saints as referee calls it right
This on-off game provided plenty of intrigue ahead of kick-off but ended in a straightforward win for the home side once play got underway with Brackley claiming the three points to close the gap on leaders Salford City and Harrogate Town and extend the season-long unbeaten home record.
A lunchtime inspection passed the pitch fit to play but after hours of steady rain through the afternoon the referee called the match off shortly after 6pm only to reverse the decision 45 minutes later. Kick off was delayed but when the action got underway Saints took an early lead, Aaron Williams needing just four minutes to find the net, neatly set up by Lee Ndlovu, and Brackley never looked back. Alex Gudger doubled the lead after 22 minutes smashing in a rebound after Ndlovu’s shot had cannoned back off the keeper who had saved well.
Bottom placed Ferriby, with just the solitary win to their name all season, came out after the break with greater resolve and physicality and to their credit never gave up. But Jimmy Armson added to Saints’ lead in the 70th minute finishing a delightful passage of play as Brackley dominated possession switching play from left to right before Ellis Myles crossed the ball low and hard and Armson found the bottom corner of the net past Ross Durrant.
Kevin Wilkin was pleased to see his side back to winning ways after defeat at Blyth Spartans last Saturday. “Everyone was mightily disappointed after Saturday’s performance so it was good to have another game again so soon,” he said. “We started tonight with good purpose and showed what we are about. Ferriby never gave up and we had to manage the game. We showed good patience and took our chances. It is good to get a bit of confidence back ahead of what will be a very tough game when Darlington come here on Saturday.”
